This site is a tribute to Noel Rogers. Duty-Disciplined - Decency - Honour - Dignity - Respect. These are some of the qualities that Noel not only held in high esteem but practised every day during his time on earth. He was a proud & dedicated man. He saw a lot during his lifetime & grew up in uncertain times during World War II which understandably influenced his views. He had been a Cadet in the Royal Air Force & went on to do his National Service with the Army.
Noel was one of six children born in Vron & moved to the new mining village of Llay in 1928 at the age of 6 months with his parents & siblings - Irene, Neville, Kenneth, Iris & Wynne. He remained in the village for the rest of his life.
In 1949 Noel married Beryl Jones, also from the village & they went on to have three children - Annette, Christopher & Joanne. Noel, Beryl and the family moved home several times, but always remaining in Llay. Noel and Beryl loved travel & many happy years were spent holidaying as a family & then later in life as a couple. Noel started his working life at the local Colliery in the offices, but later moved to Tunnel Cement in Padeswood as their Purchasing & Stores Manager, he remained with the company until his retirement.
Noel loved sport & in his youth played football & cricket for the village, later in life Noel took up golf & went on many golfing holidays with friends. With the help of some of these friends Noel organised The Poppy Golf Competition, raising funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Noel always had a strong involvement with the Royal British Legion, starting by working behind the bar as a second job to support his family. This involvement grew more as the years went by. He held the position of both Branch Chairman & Branch President, as well as undertaking duties within the County; later taking on the mammoth task of increasing revenue for the national Poppy Appeal as Chairman of Fundraising. Noel had spoken with his family for ideas how to attain this & it was agreed that the younger generations needed to be encouraged to support the Poppy Appeal. It was with this in mind that The Spice Girls were invited to launch the National Poppy Appeal in 1997 with Dame Vera Lynn in London. Noel continued this theme over te years whilst chairman & invited several popular bands to launch the Poppy Appeal.
Noel & Beryl were also involved with the Royal British Legion War Widows pilgrimages & visited many countries escorting widows & relatives to visit their loved ones graves.
In the Queens New Years Honours List for 2000 Noel was honoured with the O.B.E (Officer of the order of the British Empire) for his voluntary services to the Royal British Legion and ex-service personnel. Noel was extremely proud to receive this tribute.
In his later years Noel stepped down from his Royal British Legion duties to care for Beryl, which he did with total love & dedication. Noel loved his family dearly & his grandchildren - Andrew, Simon, Katie, Daniel & Nia were a great sense of pride for him. Over the last 12 months things have been very different, & to protect Noel, he wasn't able to see his grandchildren & great grandchildren - Rhiannon, Seren, Harri & Jac; but he always asked after hem & wanted tp know what was going on in their lives.
Noel was held in great respect & will be sadly missed by all who knew & loved him.
Noel will be greatly missed as a friend and neighbour to us and our children. As with many we had the utmost respect and regards for him as a true gentleman.
For Noel’s granddaughter Nia. He means everything to her so he must have been as incredible as she tells us! Rest in peace, Noel. Love and best wishes to the family x
I never got to meet Noel but I am very close to one of his Grandchildren. I know how much he meant to her and also wanted to show support to such an amazing cause.
