He was the only Grandad I ever knew but what a Grandad he was. I have so many memories of him from my younger years. I remember going for walks with him and his beloved dog Tara and learning all about the different trees down the fields. I could always tell the difference between a silver birch tree and beech tree! I remember having so much fun with him on holiday, whether it be abroad or in his caravan in Portmadoc where we spent so many summers as a family living it up on Black Rock beach. He knew how to have a good time! He was a very proud and dignified man and I always looked up to him. I admired the way he carried out his Legion duties and dedicated countless years to the cause. He was an amazing man, so knowledgeable about so many things. He did a lot with his life and we were all so proud when he was awarded his OBE. I was always so proud of him leading the 'bowler hats' at the Cenotaph in London for the Remembrance Celebrations back in the day or taking the salute at our own celebrations in the village. I was always so in awe of him and how much these things meant to him and how he was adamant that their memories should live on and be respected by ALL generations. It's a wonderful legacy that he has left behind. In recent years it has been a joy to see how happy it made him when he saw his great-grandsons. He always got a kick out of them, laughing at the things they said or just being so happy to see them thriving. I wish he could have seen more of them and their lives as they grow and accomplish new things. I wish I could find the words to say how much I will miss him. Rest in peace Grandad, you've earned it. Give Nanna and Mum our love. Until we meet again..... Love you always, Katie Tony, Harri and Jac xxx
